CURRENT FAVORITE LA SPOTS

la favorites | designlovefest

it that heatwave time of year in LA and i’m feel hot and bothered by the rising temps. in an attempt to combat my bad attitude i started thinking of all the things i love about LA. the little things, the things that are part of my life and that really make this city the one i love. i often feel a bit bad for the tourists that i see in los angeles, the city is so spread out and they’re trekking all over, sitting in traffic and going to hollywood which is crowded and a major let down. but there really is so much to love about this city, and here are few of my favorite things to currently do in LA, just in case you’re looking (most of these are on the east side!). i say currently, because this list is always changing!   – joanie

lou wine shop: in my opinion, this is the best wine shop in the city. their focus is on natural and unusual wines and they can offer all sorts of information on the farmer and family the wine came from and what to drink when and where. it’s in my neighborhood and i go there often. he also does $15 tastings almost every friday and saturday.

the left bank: i love second hand shopping, vintage or consignment and this little shop is the perfect place. the prices are very reasonable. i always leave with something and some of my favorite things in my closet are from here. two parking spots in the back that are often open!

griffith park + trails cafe: i hike this a trail a couple times a week with my friend katherine. the little cafe at the bottom is the perfect post hike reward, and has the best homemade almond milk lattes and egg in a basket.

rocco’s italian market + deli: their roasted vegetable sandwich is my favorite. take it to go and go sit at Barnsdale for a pretty view of the city.

the NOW: it’s relaxing as soon as you walk in the door, it always smells good, they have easy to get to locations, go treat yourself to a 50 minute massage.

bay city italian deli: another deli, i know. but this is the perfect post beach stop when you’re hungry and want something cold to drink. the lines can be long. i love grocery stores so wandering the aisles while we wait is fun for me. our beach of choice is will rogers state beach.

dune: this is also close to where i live and is a semi-regular spot for me and my husband. we usually sit outside and i almost exclusively order the fried chicken plate. if you go for lunch, grab a coffee at proof bakery after.

homestate: they have a couple of locations, the highland park one offers frozen margaritas and a big patio which is a big but we more often go to the Los Feliz location and then stop in go get em tiger after for coffee. it’s a great weekend combo.

the vista: the only have one screen so fingers crossed it’s showing something you want to see, but this theater is always worth visiting. grab a coffee from across the street (they let you bring it in) and enjoy the AC.

studio metamorphosis + maru coffee: not sure if a workout class fits on this list but i really love the combo of a great workout and then a grabbing a coffee (literally next door!) at Maru. try the spiced cold brew, it tastes like fall.

heyday: bri and i both really love the facials at heyday. you’re in and out quickly, they are effective but not painful. i go to the beverly location, ask for Nori, she’s great.

pine + crane: we’ve been hitting this place up a lot lately, my go-to order is the dan dan noodles, splitting the beef roll, and a passionfruit black tea with boba. the best!

A TIKI PARTY AT ROW DTLA

a tiki party at ROW | designlovefest

very excited to share the details on this party because we went all out and it turned out so pretty! it has been awhile since we got to host a party for no reason other than to celebrate and hang with friends on a warm summer evening and this ended up being perfect. the only thing we knew from the onset was that we’d be hosting it at ROW DTLA on one of their rooftops and that we wanted it to have a mixology tie in, i love when events have some type of interactive/learning element! it’s a good ice breaker and people walk away with a little knowledge they didn’t have before. we landed on the theme of Tiki which felt like the perfect combo of summer and celebration.

the roof top offered a completely blank slate. the background is of downtown LA and has killer views so i knew we wanted to highlight that and to also create a relaxing, intimate environment.  i invited about 15 friends so i didn’t want the party to be too spread out. to create the atmosphere, i started with found rentals, which is an amazing furniture company in southern california. we’ve used them for many events and they have the best selection. they have a bunch of cool rattan pieces that were perfect for the theme and i mixed in some colorful rugs, pillows and tons of lanterns.

we worked with of the flowers (she did my wedding florals too!) and she really nailed it with all of the details from the palms decorating the bar to the dried leaves and flowers over the day bed and the lanterns and greens hanging on the lights. she created small center pieces for the table we’d have room to make drinks but still have a punch of color and texture.

for the food, we hired Haute Chefs who always do a great job of creating a vibe and they really focus on the details, which i love. we had a tropical fruit station to start and then passed appetizers like mini poké bowls, fried chicken sandwiches, crab cakes and mini pineapple dole whips for dessert. they also helped us curate the drink list which included a pain killer and the classic mai tai. since it was an all female crowed we wanted to have a female mixologist for the teaching portion and haute chef’s introduced us to Nikki who was perfect for the evening. she taught everyone a bit about the origins of tiki culture and bars and also how to make a mai tai, do a whip shake and some different elements to have on hand for creating tiki cocktails at home.

everyone was outfitted with their own mixology kit. the shakers and jiggers were from cocktail kingdom which is one of our favorite places to buy bar supplies, they have such pretty glassware! a linen napkin from hawkins new york (which has a gorgeous store at ROW DTLA and the best curation), a tiki mug that we collected from all over the internet at places like etsy and ebay, a metal straw (from Flask & Field, they also have a killer wine selection!) and a tiki drink pick.

this post is part of our year long partnership with ROW DTLA which is one of our favorite places in the city to shop, eat, drink and hang. we’re super excited to be hosted two more events there. you can see all of the shops and restaurants they have here.  and you can follow them on to hear about new openings, events and parties!

A MAGICAL NIGHT WITH UBER BLACK

a magical night | designlovefest
a magical night | designlovefest

i’ve been staying in a lot lately, cooking at home, reading, hanging with Justin and generally just laying low. between planning the wedding and recovering from the wedding things have been pretty chill at our house. which i love, but it’s also fun to mix it up, and i felt like it was time for a night out on the town! since i haven’t been to the magic castle (a classic LA spot!!) in many years (and justin has never been!), i really wanted to surprise justin and his cousin blake with a magical evening there! it’s one of those secret club type places where a magician has to invite you, you enter through a bookcase, you dress fancy and have cocktails, there are no photos allowed inside, and you sort of feel transported in time when you arrive. there are little magic shows in small cave-like rooms, card tricks happening at the bars, and an overall fun, kitchy feeling.

so, we made a whole night of it, drank martinis at home while we got dressed up, requested an Uber Black trip (which made it feel like a celebration from the second we left!), and had such a wonderful time with close friends and family!

you really do feel relaxed in an Uber Black, so there are a few occasions i like to splurge on one. they are great for meetings across town when i need to work during traffic. they’ve added some new premium features, like the ability to request a “Silent Ride” so you reduce distractions while you are on your way. i like to take them on early morning trips to the airport so i can feel relaxed and calm before a long flight  or job (they are usually stocked with water and snacks, chargers, and music controls). you can also request Temperature Preference from your phone and also request Luggage Support before your driver even arrives which is great for people like me who are anxious travelers and like to be in control.

after a few drinks, a ton of magic, and a lot of laughter, we made it home safe thanks to Uber Black. and sang ain’t no mountain high enough while possibly driving the driver nuts. although, i think i caught him signing along, so maybe he loved it. thanks for always getting us out of the house and on town town, Uber!

EAST SIDE LA TOUR!

east side LA | food tour

you could probably argue that los angeles is one of the most exciting food cities in the world right now and there is no shortage of fun new places popping up all the time. i live on the east side of the city, (i consider the east anything from east hollywood to south pasadena) which is FULL of cool places to explore, new cocktail bars to try, lunch spots, farmer’s markets and casual dinner joints. i love to cook at home but i also like to get inspired and try new places. transportation issues are real in the city, getting places, parking, etc so we partnered with uber to create this east side food guide. i’ve used uber for years and really appreciate how accessible it makes traversing los angeles. i get really anxious thinking about parking logistics and i appreciate not having to worry about that. they also have a new feature that lets you request a ride for a friend which is awesome because sometimes an LAX pick up isn’t the easiest but i don’t want someone visiting me having to pay for their own airport ride.

here are some highlights from our food day and i am adding a few faves in as well!

walt’s: a new-ish local spot in our neighborhood where we easily grab a beer and a pretzel on the weekends. it has a cute, laid back retro vibe.

cacao mexicatessen: we love this authentic mexican restaruant in eagle rock. we eat at the bar on a friday nights and order the tacos, elote, and a few modelos. their food is really delicious!

a few minutes down the road we stopped at Joy, the sister restaurant to pine and crane in silver lake. the minced pork rice bowl and the shrimp wontons are my favorite!

also, bonus of riding in an uber is getting to look out the window and take in the scene. we drove through the cutest neighborhoods by occidental college with tons of pretty craftsman homes that i’d never noticed before.

a quick pick me up coffee from collage coffee, basically a walk up coffee window on york street. love their tiles too!

and if it’s happy hour, check out sonny’s hideaway across the street. it’s a good date spot.

and then took a ride over to the thursday night pasadena farmer’s market which is a nice treat in the fall. it’s from 4-7pm so the weather is great, the vibe is chill and you can grab a bunch of snacks for dinner. i highly recommend taking an uber there because the parking can be tricky in that neighborhood.

we tried the gourmet rice balls from a stand there and wow they were so good!

when in south pasadena try out Gus’s bbq. love the diner vibe in there and they make great classic cocktails! we always share a bbq plate and sit at the counter!

and then a short 10 minute ride to check out some new and old faves in highland park. there is SO many new spots opening on figeuroa, it’s exciting. we’ve been spending a lot of weekends just strolling from place to place.

homestate for queso and classic texan cuisine!!

cookbook is somewhere i go at least once a week, it makes me so happy. i love getting meats and cheese there, along with other specialty foods when i’m entertaining. it’s really the perfect little grocery shop.

then we tried the new vinyl bar, gold line. we ordered manhattans and played a few songs on the jukebox before dinner. i like it in there!

kitchen mouse is also a great breakfast and lunch spot, i love the breakfast tacos and the moros cakes! definitely check it out.

triple beam pizza is definitely a new favorite, we loveee their pizza! we tried out the new restaurant hippo in the back and the ambiance was super nice, we loved the wine but didn’t love our food as much as the pizza in the front…just gotta be honest here. but it’s a nice patio and the food is pretty good.

and grab a bottle of wine from highland park wine on your way home!!! they also have tastings there and it’s nice to feel a part of the community and enjoy wine and cheese.

LOS ANGELES CONSIGNMENT STORES!

los angeles consignment stores | designlovefest
 image found here

as promised i’ve put together a list of my favorite los angeles consignment/second hand stores! my favorite ones offer a mix of new and vintage clothing items. the thing to remember with these stores is that some of them are hit or miss, just because you went once and didn’t find anything doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go back. also, it’s important that you have an open mind, be willing to try on lots of things without expectation, think outside the box when it comes to sizing as it has changed so much over the years, and try on things that might be unexpected, you never know what you’ll fall in love with! – joanie

The Left Bank – located in frog town, this is one of my favorites in the city partly because their stock is great and rotates all the time and partly because the owner is super sweet and i like supporting her. you should definitely follow her on because she shares stories of what’s new and it always makes me want to stop in. this is your place if you like vintage denim, tees, 90’s rayon and cool accessories like belts and earrings.

Wasteland – there are multiple locations in the city but i think the studio city one is the best, it’s not as overwhelming as the one in west hollywood and i always seems to score. they have a specific section that is vintage and that’s generally where i head first but they have a great mix of new and vintage items. i also recommend checking out the men’s t-shirt and sweatshirt section. i snagged a vintage gucci sweatshirt there about 12 years ago and still love it to this day. worth stopping in if you’re in the area!

Style on Green – this is in pasadena and a completely different vibe than any of the others. it definitely caters to an older crowd, lots of St. John knits. but, that means that many of the other items get looked over. it’s hit or miss for me but used to be around the corner from my house so i stopped in often. i’ve scored many things but a highlight was a gorgeous wool wrap with a suede fringe by Chloe for $150.

Luxe De Ville – this is in echo park and i think it’s almost all vintage but they have a great prices and great pieces. this is where we got bri’s Dolly Parton costume! and i’ve also scored a 70’s black fringe dress and a 90’s floral wrap.

Foxhole – next to night and market in silver lake, this is the place to go if you love vintage denim! she has a great selection and she also does denim alternations. if you’ve ever found the perfect pair of vintage jeans and taken them to a tailor who totally ruined them you know how important it is to get your jeans altered by someone who knows their way around denim. the prices aren’t cheap but a good pair of jeans will last you a long time.
